Therma-Tru Impact Garage Doors: The Tampa Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Therma-Tru-compatible impact garage doors throughout Tampa, with typical installed pricing landing between $2,400 and $6,800 depending on door size, panel series, and opener integration. Most Tampa homeowners discover they need this page after a storm season inspection reveals cracked panels, a sagging track, or a door that no longer seals tight against the humidity. You’re in the right place if your Therma-Tru door took wind debris last hurricane season, or if the springs sound like they’re working twice as hard as they should.

Call (386) 559-6999

Therma-Tru impact doors are built for Florida’s wind-load requirements, but even well-built doors wear down. The good news is that Winslow Windows & Doors carries the replacement hardware and panel systems to match your existing Therma-Tru setup, and we’re authorized Therma-Tru installers. Ed Winslow’s name is on the door, literally, so we don’t guess at compatibility. We verify the model, measure the opening, and install it right the first time.

Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru impact garage doors fall into a few main series lines, and the part you need depends on which one you have. The fiberglass-skin Therma-Tru Classic series and the heavier gauge Therma-Tru Pulse series are the two most common we see in Tampa garages. Both use the same track profiles and spring systems, but the Pulse series panels are noticeably heavier, which means spring tension specs differ between the two. If you mix a Classic-rated spring with a Pulse door, you’ll get a door that strains to open or, worse, snaps a cable mid-cycle.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most Tampa homeowners run into: the panel thickness and insulation core changed around 2016. Pre-2016 Therma-Tru doors use a 1-3/8 inch panel with a polyurethane core rated at R-6.5. Post-2016 doors moved to 2 inch panels with an R-9 rating. The panels are not interchangeable. If you have an older door and one panel is damaged, we can’t bolt a new-style panel into an old-style track system without replacing the entire door. That’s not us upselling. That’s geometry.

Your best move is to check the sticker on the inside edge of the door panel, near the bottom hinge. It lists the model, manufacture date, and panel thickness. Snap a photo of it before you call us at (386) 559-6999. It saves a trip and gets you an accurate quote faster.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for hardware like rollers, hinges, cables, and springs, quality aftermarket parts from Amarr and Clopay distributors perform identically to Therma-Tru OEM and cost 20 to 30 percent less. We stock both and will tell you which makes sense for your door. For actual door panels and full door replacements, we recommend staying with Therma-Tru OEM. The impact rating is tested as a complete system, and mixing panel brands voids the wind-load certification, which your Tampa homeowners insurance carrier will care about.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Impact Garage Doors Are Failing

  • The door shudders or jerks when opening. This usually points to worn rollers or a track that’s drifted out of alignment. In Tampa’s humidity, galvanized track brackets corrode faster than anything else on the door, especially in older homes without conditioned garages.
  • Visible cracks or spider-webbing in a panel. Impact doors are rated to take a hit, but repeated exposure to flying debris during Tampa’s summer storms leaves micro-fractures that spread over time. Once moisture gets into the fiberglass skin, the panel delaminates and loses its wind-load rating.
  • The door won’t seal along the bottom or sides. Shifting concrete and daily thermal cycling knock the track out of square. A door that doesn’t seal lets in Tampa’s damp air, and in garage spaces that sit at 90 percent humidity from June through September, that means mold on stored items and a door that swells against the frame.
  • Louder-than-normal operation, especially a sharp snap at the top of the cycle. That snap is a cable slipping on the drum or a spring losing tension. In a high-humidity environment like Tampa, springs corrode at the coil contact points and lose about 10 percent of their rated force within five years.
  • The opener struggles and reverses on its own. Most of the time, the opener’s force settings are compensating for a door that’s gotten heavier, usually because the springs are no longer doing their share. The opener isn’t broken. It’s telling you the door’s balance is off, and continuing to run it will cook the opener motor.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full Therma-Tru-compatible impact garage door installed in Tampa, you’re looking at $2,400 to $4,600 for a standard single-car door and $4,200 to $6,800 for a two-car door. The spread depends on panel series, insulation level, window inserts if you have them, and whether we’re reusing your existing track or replacing it. If you only need hardware replacement, springs, cables, rollers, and track adjustments, most jobs land between $280 and $700 including parts and labor.

Every Winslow Windows & Doors quote is a written, line-item price. You’ll see the door cost, hardware cost, labor, and any disposal fees separated out. No vague “miscellaneous” line. No change order halfway through the job. If we tell you a number, that’s the number.

Our workmanship warranty covers the installation, and the Therma-Tru OEM warranty covers the door itself. We also back everything with the 36500-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not done right, Ed Winslow comes back and makes it right. No ticket numbers, no warranty phone tree, no waiting three weeks for a callback.

If you have a written estimate from another Tampa installer, bring it in. We’ll give you a free second opinion, even if it’s just confirming the other guy’s number is fair.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can safely check the sticker on your door, take photos of any damage, test the balance by pulling the manual release and lifting the door halfway, and visually inspect the rollers and track for obvious wear. That information helps you talk intelligently with any installer, including us.

What you should not do is touch the springs, cables, or bottom brackets. A garage door spring under tension stores enough force to break bone or worse, and Tampa’s humidity makes old springs brittle at the stress points. We’ve seen homeowners try to save $200 by swapping their own springs and end up with a cable whipping through drywall. That’s not a scare story. That’s a Tuesday.

For anything beyond the visual checks, call (386) 559-6999. Ed Winslow has been doing this since 2011, and his crew has worked garage doors on bungalows in Seminole Heights and big remodels near the Riverwalk. Every tech on your job is background-checked and in uniform. You’ll know exactly who’s at your door before the truck pulls up.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★

"Excellent work and a fair price for what it is, though impact glass is never cheap and one bedroom window arrived with a scratched pane. Ed flagged it before I saw it and the replacement went in without me chasing anyone."

BBartholomew Crenshaw
★★★★★

"He replaced the front door and the garage door in the same week, both rated for impact, and lined the frames up so straight my level had nothing to say. My wife stopped hearing the highway from the front room."

MMaximilian Vasquez
★★★★★

"A tile roof repair and new windows from the same company meant one crew, one permit runner, and nobody blaming the other trade. Ed checked the roof work himself before the tarp came off."

HHenrietta Pemberton
★★★★★

"Three big companies quoted us and every one sent a salesman with a leased truck. Ed turned up in a truck with his own name on the door, quoted less, and his crew were the same faces on day one and day nine."
