CGI Impact Garage Doors: The Tampa Owner’s Guide

If you own a CGI impact garage door in Tampa and a part has failed, here’s what you need to know up front: we stock and install CGI-compatible replacement parts for most current and legacy CGI models, with typical installed repair costs running $180 to $950 depending on the component. Most single-part replacements are done in one visit. What usually brings Tampa homeowners to this page is a door that suddenly won’t open, a screech that echoes through the whole house, or a roller that’s chewed through its track after another summer of humidity and salt air.

Call (386) 559-6999

We’re Winslow Windows & Doors, and we’ve been installing and repairing CGI impact garage doors across the Tampa Bay area since 2011. We’re an independent service provider, not a CGI corporate operation, which means we answer to you and to Ed Winslow, not to a franchise playbook. And yes, Ed’s name is on the door. Literally.

One thing Tampa owners should know before they start Googling part numbers: CGI doors built for Florida’s High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) use heavier-gauge hardware and reinforced end stiles that standard hardware-store parts were never designed to match. Swapping in a generic roller or hinge from a big-box shelf may work for a season, but it’s a false economy when hurricane season rolls around.

Which CGI Models This Applies To

CGI has produced several impact-rated garage door lines over the years, and parts compatibility is not always interchangeable between them. The most common models we see in Tampa are the CGI 3500 and CGI 5500 series, along with the older Estate and Traditional lines still hanging on homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s. Each series has its own track profile, roller diameter, hinge geometry, and spring tension specs.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up Tampa homeowners every month: a roller from a 3500 will not seat correctly in a 5500 track. The stem diameters differ, and forcing one in means the door rides off-center, chews the track, and eventually binds mid-cycle. Before you order anything, check the metal tag riveted to the inside of the door panel near the top section. You’re looking for a model number, a serial number, and usually a wind-load rating like “Miami-Dade NOA” or “FBC HVHZ.” That tag tells us everything we need to match your part.

For hardware like rollers, hinges, and weather seals, we recommend OEM CGI or equivalent hurricane-rated replacements. There are quality aftermarket options, but they need to match not just the dimensions but the corrosion profile. Tampa’s salt air is unforgiving on untreated steel. A galvanized or stainless roller from a reputable supplier will outlast a zinc-coated bargain part by years.

We also stock and service replacement hardware for PGT, CWS, and ES Windows garage door lines, so if you’re not sure whether your door is a true CGI or a rebrand, call us. We’ll sort it out from the tag.

Signs Your CGI Impact Garage Door Is Failing

  • Grinding or screeching when the door moves. Almost always a roller bearing that’s dried out or corroded. Tampa’s humidity gets into the bearing, the grease breaks down, and metal starts riding on metal. Left alone, it scores the track and the repair gets more expensive.
  • The door shakes or jerks on the way up and down. This points to worn rollers, a hinge that’s lost its rivet, or a section that’s out of alignment. On impact-rated CGI doors, the panels are heavier than standard doors, so any imbalance shows up fast.
  • A cable looks frayed or is dangling loose. Do not run the door. The cable is under tension and is one half of the system holding the spring load. A snapped cable on a heavy impact door can drop the door hard and hurt someone.
  • The door won’t stay up or closes too fast. That’s the torsion spring losing its charge. CGI doors spec their springs to a specific cycle life, and in Florida, the heat and humidity accelerate fatigue. An impact door that slams shut is a safety risk and a liability.
  • The bottom weather seal is cracked, flattened, or pulling away from the retainer. On an impact door, that seal isn’t just keeping rain out. It’s part of the pressure rating. Once it’s compromised, wind-driven water gets under the door during heavy storms, and the door’s impact integrity is quietly degrading.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s where we get specific about Tampa market pricing. A single roller replacement runs $180 to $260. A set of ten rollers, which is what we recommend when three or more have failed, costs $320 to $480 installed. A pair of torsion springs runs $450 to $750 depending on the spring size your CGI door calls for. A full set of replacement hinges runs $280 to $420. A bottom weather seal, installed, is $160 to $240.

Part Typical Installed Cost (Tampa)
Single roller replacement $180 - $260
Set of 10 rollers $320 - $480
Torsion spring pair $450 - $750
Hinge set $280 - $420
Bottom weather seal $160 - $240

Every quote is a written line-item estimate before work starts. No change orders, no surprise add-ons. The price we quote is the price you pay. And every repair is covered by the 36500-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not done right, we make it right. That’s a hundred-year standard we’re willing to stand behind because we’ve been doing this in Tampa long enough to know our work holds up.

DIY or Call Us?

Let’s be straight about this. Some parts, you can absolutely handle. Checking the bottom seal for cracks, tightening a loose hinge bolt with the door in the down position, cleaning track debris, testing the auto-reverse sensors. Those are all safe Saturday-morning jobs. But torsion springs on a CGI impact door? No. Those springs are under enough tension to remove fingers or worse. One wrong move with a winding bar and a homeowner ends up in the ER. We’ve seen the aftermath, and it’s not a lesson worth learning firsthand.

Cables too. A cable that’s off its drum means the spring system is compromised. It’s a trained-professional repair, and frankly, for what it costs to have it done right versus what it costs when it goes wrong, there’s no sensible DIY path. If you’re not sure which side of the line your part falls on, call (386) 559-6999 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you straight whether it’s a do-it-yourself job or a call-us job, and we won’t charge you for the honesty.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★

"Excellent work and a fair price for what it is, though impact glass is never cheap and one bedroom window arrived with a scratched pane. Ed flagged it before I saw it and the replacement went in without me chasing anyone."

BBartholomew Crenshaw
★★★★★

"He replaced the front door and the garage door in the same week, both rated for impact, and lined the frames up so straight my level had nothing to say. My wife stopped hearing the highway from the front room."

MMaximilian Vasquez
★★★★★

"A tile roof repair and new windows from the same company meant one crew, one permit runner, and nobody blaming the other trade. Ed checked the roof work himself before the tarp came off."

HHenrietta Pemberton
★★★★★

"Three big companies quoted us and every one sent a salesman with a leased truck. Ed turned up in a truck with his own name on the door, quoted less, and his crew were the same faces on day one and day nine."
