Therma-Tru Door Installation: The Tampa Owner’s Guide

Therma-Tru door installation in Tampa typically runs $350 to $1,100 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping hardware on an existing slab, re-hanging a door that’s sagged out of square, or setting a brand-new pre-hung unit. We stock the most common Therma-Tru replacement parts on our trucks, so a lot of these jobs get finished in a single visit. Most Tampa homeowners discover the problem the same way: the door won’t latch, the bottom sweep is dragging or letting water in, or a hinge has worked loose enough that the whole slab sits cockeyed in the frame.

The good news for Therma-Tru owners is that these doors are built with modular components. When a part fails, you usually don’t need a whole new door. You need the right part matched to the right series, installed so the door closes square and seals tight against Florida humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. That’s exactly what we do. We’re an independent service and installation company, not a division of Therma-Tru, which means we answer to you and to Ed Winslow’s name on the business, not to a corporate warranty department.

Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru builds entry doors in several families: Classic-Craft, Fiber-Classic, Pulse, Benchmark, and the newer Legacy and Studio lines. The parts that tend to fail aren’t the door slabs themselves. It’s the hardware and weatherstripping around them: hinges, corner pads, sweeps and thresholds, strike plates, and the adjustable sill caps on the Benchmark series.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into constantly in Tampa: Therma-Tru corner pads and weatherstripping are series-specific. A Classic-Craft corner pad won’t seat properly on a Fiber-Classic frame even if it looks close, because the kerf profiles and pad geometry differ between series. If you just buy whatever looks right at the hardware store, you’ll get a door that closes hard or whistles air. The right way to identify your part is to look for the Therma-Tru label on the hinge edge of the slab. It gives you the series, the door height, and the manufacturing date. On pre-hung units there’s also a serial number sticker on the frame head or hinge jamb.

OEM versus aftermarket: for weatherstripping, sweeps, and sills we almost always recommend genuine Therma-Tru parts. The tolerances matter too much, and in Florida’s humidity an aftermarket sweep that’s a millimeter too short becomes a water leak by August. For hinges and hardware, a quality commercial-grade equivalent from Rejuvenation or Emtek often outperforms the builder-grade original. We stock both kinds on the truck and we’ll tell you honestly which one makes sense for your specific door.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Door Installation Is Failing

  • Visible light or daylight showing around the door edges. This means the weatherstripping has compressed past the point of recovery or the slab has shifted in the frame. On a Therma-Tru with an adjustable sill, the fix is often a simple sill cap adjustment. On a fixed sill, you’re usually replacing the sweep and corner pads.
  • The door drags or sticks at the bottom. In Tampa, what actually happens is the hinge screws have loosened from the weight of the slab, especially on 8-foot Classic-Craft doors with decorative glass. The door sags, the latch loses alignment, and the sweep grinds on the threshold. Tightening the screws is a temporary fix. The permanent fix is longer screws into the framing and re-shimming the hinge mortises.
  • The latch doesn’t engage without lifting or shoving the door. Same root cause as the dragging: the slab has moved out of plane with the jamb. If you catch this early, it’s a hinge and alignment repair. If you ignore it for a year, you’ll also need a new latch assembly because the bolt has been grinding the strike plate.
  • Water staining on the interior floor after a Tampa downpour. The sweep has hardened and lost contact, or the sill corner joints have opened up. Therma-Tru corner seals serve double duty on Benchmark sills: they’re both a seal and a drain. When they fail, water walks right over the threshold.
  • The door won’t close all the way without slamming. New weatherstripping that was installed incorrectly will do this. So will a hinge that’s frozen or worn. If the hinge knuckles are mushroomed or the pin won’t hold, the door’s effective weight shifts forward and the closing geometry goes bad.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we see for Therma-Tru door installation work in neighborhoods across Tampa, from Westshore to Carrollwood to New Tampa:

  • Weatherstripping, sweep, and corner pad replacement: $180 to $340 installed per door, parts included.
  • Hinge replacement and slab re-alignment: $220 to $420, depending on how many hinges and how far the jamb has drifted.
  • Adjustable sill cap replacement: $280 to $480, more if the sill is heavily corroded and needs full replacement rather than a cap swap.
  • Pre-hung Therma-Tru entry door installation: $850 to $1,100 for a standard single entry, including leveling, shimming, insulating the rough opening, and interior trim where applicable. Decorative glass, transoms, and sidelights add to the bottom line.
  • Full Rustica or Classic-Craft with sidelights: $1,500 to $2,600 installed, depending on configuration.

Before any work starts you’ll have a written line-item estimate. The price on the estimate is the price on the invoice. There are no change orders for work we can see on the day of the estimate, and if we discover something structural once the door is open, we call you before doing anything. Our labor is covered by the 36500-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not done right, we come back. That’s the whole warranty conversation.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things are fair game for a competent homeowner: tightening hinge screws, cleaning the sweep channel, checking whether the sill has set-screws that need adjusting. If the door’s just a little sticky and the hinges are still tight, go ahead and try the small stuff.

Where DIY goes sideways is when the slab is already sagging, the jamb has spread, or the sill is rotting where it meets the Florida slab. That’s when a homeowner with a drill and a Saturday starts chasing one adjustment after another, and the door ends up worse than it started. You also need to know that a misaligned pre-hung Therma-Tru can’t be fixed by sanding the door bottom. That ruins the sweep channel and turns a $300 repair into a $900 replacement. If you’re not sure which situation you’re in, call (386) 559-6999 and describe what the door’s doing. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth booking a visit. No charge for the conversation.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★

"Excellent work and a fair price for what it is, though impact glass is never cheap and one bedroom window arrived with a scratched pane. Ed flagged it before I saw it and the replacement went in without me chasing anyone."

BBartholomew Crenshaw
★★★★★

"He replaced the front door and the garage door in the same week, both rated for impact, and lined the frames up so straight my level had nothing to say. My wife stopped hearing the highway from the front room."

MMaximilian Vasquez
★★★★★

"A tile roof repair and new windows from the same company meant one crew, one permit runner, and nobody blaming the other trade. Ed checked the roof work himself before the tarp came off."

HHenrietta Pemberton
★★★★★

"Three big companies quoted us and every one sent a salesman with a leased truck. Ed turned up in a truck with his own name on the door, quoted less, and his crew were the same faces on day one and day nine."
