PGT Window Replacement: The Tampa Owner’s Guide

PGT window replacement in Tampa typically runs $450 to $1,200 per window installed, depending on the series, glass package, and whether we’re swapping the sash, the glass unit, or the full frame. We stock PGT-compatible replacement parts on our trucks and can usually complete the work the same day we diagnose it. Most Tampa homeowners call us after noticing one of three things: a window that won’t stay open, condensation trapped between the panes, or a draft that wasn’t there last hurricane season.

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably spotted the problem already. Maybe it’s a crank that spins without moving the sash, or a lock that won’t engage on the PGT 5500 you installed in 2016. Here’s what you need to know before you spend a dime.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

We work on the full PGT lineup that’s common across Tampa Bay homes: the WinGuard vinyl and aluminum impact lines, SpectraGuard, Eze-Breeze, and the older PGT Classic series still installed in thousands of houses from Westchase to Brandon. Each line uses different hardware, balances, and glazing beads, and mixing them up causes exactly the kind of callback nobody wants.

The fastest way to identify your PGT model is the label on the edge of the sash or on the head of the frame. It will list the series number, the glass thickness, and a manufacturing code. If the label has worn off (sun and salt air do that in Florida), we measure the glass thickness and the sash profile, then match it against PGT’s current parts catalog. One gotcha specific to PGT: the WinGuard aluminum series changed its balance shoe design around 2012, so a balance from a 2010 unit will not fit a 2015 frame even if both are “WinGuard.” We check that before ordering anything.

On the OEM vs. aftermarket question: for PGT impact glass, we recommend OEM glass packs every time. The interlayer, the spacer seal, and the frame gasket all work together, and PGT’s laminated units are engineered to meet Miami-Dade and Florida Building Code impact standards. Saving $40 on an aftermarket glass pack that fogs in three years isn’t a trade we’ll make on your windows. For hardware like balances, locks, and cranks, quality aftermarket parts from manufacturers PGT itself has used as suppliers are often identical and cost less. We’ll tell you which is which and let you decide with real numbers in front of you. Winslow Windows & Doors is an independent service provider, not a PGT affiliate, so our recommendation is based on what holds up in Tampa, not what a corporate parts desk wants to sell.

Signs Your PGT Window Replacement Is Failing

  • Fog or condensation between the panes. This means the seal on the insulated glass unit (IGU) has failed, and Florida humidity is now living inside your window. The glass can’t be cleaned from the inside of the gap; the IGU needs replacement.
  • The sash won’t stay up or is hard to lift. The spring balances have lost tension or the shoe has snapped. In Tampa’s coastal humidity, aluminum balance housings corrode faster than in inland Florida, and WinGuard sashes are heavier than standard windows due to the impact glass, which accelerates wear.
  • A crank that turns freely but the vent won’t move. The operator’s gear teeth have stripped or the arm linkage has detached. This is common on PGT casement and awning windows after years of salt-laden air working on the hardware.
  • Daylight or a draft around the sash edge. The weatherstripping or the interlock has compressed or torn. On PGT impact windows, a degraded interlock also means your window may not close tightly enough to meet its original structural rating during a storm event.
  • The lock won’t engage, or engages loosely. The keepers and lock points have shifted or worn. This is both a security concern and, on impact-rated units, an air and water infiltration path into the wall cavity.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the straight pricing picture for Tampa, based on the jobs we run most weeks:

Replacement Type Installed Price Range Typical Timeline
IGU (glass pack only) $450 - $750 per window Same day if stocked; 1-2 weeks if ordered
Sash replacement (glass in new sash) $550 - $900 per window Same day if stocked; 1-2 weeks if ordered
Full frame replacement (tear-out) $850 - $1,200 per window 1 day per window
Hardware only (balance, lock, crank, weatherstrip) $120 - $300 per window Same day, parts on truck

Every quote is line-itemed: you see the part cost, the labor, and the disposal fee if a full frame is involved. No change orders, no “discovered” extras. Ed signs off on the final price before we start, and the 36500-Day Done Right Promise applies: if it’s not done right, we come back and make it right, period.

DIY or Call Us?

You can do a few things before you pick up the phone: take photos of the window and any labels you can find, note whether it’s a single hung, casement, or horizontal roller, and check whether the issue is in one window or several. That information shortens our diagnosis time, and we’ll ask for it anyway.

What we don’t recommend is pulling a PGT impact sash out of its frame to inspect the balances yourself. Those sashes are heavy, some weigh over 60 pounds, and the spring balances are under tension in ways that can cause real hand and finger injuries. The same goes for glass pack removal on a WinGuard unit: the lamination makes it behave differently from standard glass when cut or flexed. If you’ve got a failing PGT part, call us at (386) 559-6999 and let a technician who handles these daily do the job safely and stand behind it.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★

"Excellent work and a fair price for what it is, though impact glass is never cheap and one bedroom window arrived with a scratched pane. Ed flagged it before I saw it and the replacement went in without me chasing anyone."

BBartholomew Crenshaw
★★★★★

"He replaced the front door and the garage door in the same week, both rated for impact, and lined the frames up so straight my level had nothing to say. My wife stopped hearing the highway from the front room."

MMaximilian Vasquez
★★★★★

"A tile roof repair and new windows from the same company meant one crew, one permit runner, and nobody blaming the other trade. Ed checked the roof work himself before the tarp came off."

HHenrietta Pemberton
★★★★★

"Three big companies quoted us and every one sent a salesman with a leased truck. Ed turned up in a truck with his own name on the door, quoted less, and his crew were the same faces on day one and day nine."
